Automotive Underbody Sealant Application

November 2014

We were approached by and visited a leading car manufacturer in the UK to discuss pump problems that they were experiencing that included; excessive wear rates, poor sealing, poor customer service and high prices.

After technical discussions where process improvements were suggested to assist the operational performance of the pumps it was found this was not possible, so Slack and Parr designed a unique pump to cope with all of the customers concerns.

The new pump design incorporated special materials to have both exceptional wear resistances allowing the pumps to have a greater operational life and greater operation efficiency; internal design improvement for lubrication of all bearing areas and enhanced sealing methods to cope with the extreme pressures involved and ease of maintenance.

The Slack and Parr pump completed a 3 month trial against the customers existing pump and performed very well. Information from the plant was that due to the increased efficiency (calculated at greater than 99.9%) the sealant consumption fell considerably representing a large saving in the cost of the raw material. The pump was inspected and re-measured after the 3 months trial and was still in “as new” conditions.

As a result from the trial, the customer changed to Slack and Parr to be their official supplier of Gear metering pumps for their sealant application.
